Many times referred to as New England Candle Boxes, they were typically made of pine and made by the man of the house in the early 1800's. The candle boxes were devised to protect their candles from mice and vermin, thus they were hung on the walls for easy storage and access. Today, many of us continue the use of candle boxes to store magazines, mail or floral arrangements as seen here.

It was in the mid 1800's that doorstep mail delivery first came to be and required a mailbox. Before that, everyone had to go to the Post office to pick up their mail.
